The world, along with Google off course, is celebrating the winsome efforts and contribution of Verghese Kurien on the occasion of his 94th birth anniversary. The Google Doodle this year shows the popular social activist and entrepreneur amidst cow, setting in a typical rural background of India. Kurien, who is known as the Father of the White Revolution, earns the credit of turning India to a powerful provider of milk products from a milk-deprived nation. Under his supervision in the year 1998, India became the world’s largest milk producer, defeating America. Under the leadership of Verghese Kurien, India became one among the largest self-sustaining Industry of dairy farming.
Everything you need to know about Verghese Kurien:
The driving force behind ‘Operation Flood’, Verghese Kurien launched the National Dairy Development Board project in the year 1970 that was said to be the largest dairy program in itself. The making of a nation that was earlier milk-deficient to the largest producer of milk was never easy. Much of the credit goes to Verghese Kurien, who just within the span of 30 years (as per the global output in 2010-11) doubled the availability of milk per person in India. It is notable that under Operation Flood, Verghese Kurien brought together about 72,000 villages in rural India. His remarkable speech during a conference in Rome motivated European countries to donate their milk for Operation Flood.
The experimental zeal that Verghese Kurien shared as a person was efficient in discovering different ways of producing milk powder from the buffalo milk. It was this discovery that initiated the launch of India’s first milk powder plant in the year 1955. Apart from the famous Amul, Verghese Kurien has also established other prominent institutions in India like GCMMF (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation LTD) and NDDB (National Dairy Development Board).
India shall ever remain grateful to this power-packed contribution and visionary. Wishing a very happy 94th birthday to the Padamshri and Padmabhushan Verghese Kurien!
